When to call for circuit breaker service.
A circuit breaker is a life-saving device. Circuit breakers operate by allowing (or interrupting) the flow of electricity to a specific circuit in the wiring in our homes and businesses. If or when a circuit becomes overloaded, meaning it is delivering more electricity than it was designed to handle, the circuit breaker will disengage, or “trip,” and close the circuit. This interruption of electricity prevents the wires from overheating, the power surging at unsafe levels, and protects your electrical devices from unexpected damage.
Do you experience frequent circuit breaks when turning on electric devices or adding a device to an outlet? Do your lights go dim when you run a few different electrical appliances? Is your circuit breaker warm to the touch? If you experience any or all of these symptoms in your home or business, you need to consult with a qualified electrician to diagnose the problem. You may be able to add more electrical outlets or increase the rating of the circuit breaker to more easily handle the extra demand for electricity. But in either scenario, your present situation is an overloaded circuit.
Resetting a tripped circuit breaker.
The process of resetting a tripped circuit breaker is rather easy and doable by anyone willing to try. To safely and effectively rest a circuit breaker:
• Turn off all electronic equipment hooked up to the circuit associated with that breaker.
• Locate your electrical service panel (these are usually found in the basement, garage, laundry room, or in the space that houses your furnace and/or hot water tank.
• Identify the tripped circuit breaker. The breaker that has tripped and interrupted the electrical circuit will be in the “off” position, look like it’s in a different position than the circuits that are still working, or even may sit somewhere in between the two settings. Some newer service panels now have breakers that display red when tripped.
• To reset the tripped circuit breaker, firmly push the switch all the way down to the “off” position and then back up to the “on” position. You should hear a click as the switch snaps fully into the “on” position.
If your breaker continues to trip immediately after you’ve reset it, you may have a direct short. Do not try to reset your breakers at this point. If these steps don’t help you resolve your tripped circuit breaker problem, it’s time for you to contact a quality electrician in Armonk who can knowledgeably and effectively remedy this situation, like the team at Effective Electric.
